Expanding Interactivity in Film: Emergent Narratives through VR and Spatialized Cinematic Experiences

Interactive Film & Media Journal, 2025

Building on the original Nested Cinema experience, this article asks whether cinematic interactivity has to mean choosing what happens next. Instead, it explores a more embodied form of participation, where audiences create their own experience through where they look, move and direct their attention within a spatialised film world. Bringing together screens, responsive lighting, spatial audio and VR, the research develops the idea of emergent narrative – an approach that now sits at the heart of Nested Cinema’s continuing investigation into more spatial, participatory forms of cinematic storytelling.

Nested Cinema: An Immersive Fiction-Film Experience

Leonardo, 2024

This article introduces the original Nested Cinema concept and its first practical realisation: an immersive fiction experience unfolding across traditional screens, a designed physical environment and cinematic VR. It explores how these overlapping layers can blur the boundaries between physical and virtual space, allowing atmosphere, technology and storytelling to operate together. The work established the creative foundations for the wider Nested Cinema project and its continuing exploration of what cinema can become when the story extends beyond the screen.
